I'm glad that over the years I never glanced at The Americans' ratings. Had I done that, I might have given up on the show. Ratings for the last two seasons were about on par with WNBA games. Not that this is a scientific measure, but when I tweeted out about the finale 20 minutes before it started I got zero likes. My wife confirmed she knows one person that regularly watched the show. I am a generally cranky guy and a pretty tough critic. While there were some episodes that didn't thrill me, and an entire season (s05) that I thought was just meh, I always looked forward to watching it every week. It's in my personal top 5 of shows with The Sopranos, Breaking Bad and The Shield. Critics loved it (there are gazillions of reviews and interviews with the actors online) yet no one watched. Not that it matters, but I'm curious why that is? Is it because it's an 'old guys show' highlighting events that took place 35 years ago? Is it because it was smart TV and required at least a triple digit IQ from it's viewers unlike most of what's aired these days?
