Absolute teeth-gnashing insanity from the nightmare that was the '70s. I counted about 4 different genres that Arthur Marks invented with this movie. Bizarre blend of fun sexploitation and rough slasher from exploitation veteran Arthur Marks. The score is as bouncy as the female leads and once the killing starts, it doesn't let up. Solid. Cheesy comedy acting with a group of girls at a camp that turns into a proto-slasher. It's so weird. I like it a lot, but it's an experiment in mish-mash narrative. I suppose it has enough qualities to fit on my list. Marki Bey who plays Carla (from Sugar Hill) is spunky fun to watch. It feels half way between the 60s and 70s style of filmmaking, all low budget though. Which isn't a bad thing. Recent reviews A wholesome look at sexual and predatory relationships among young women and random dudes at a summer camp-ish beach place. Like what the other reviews have pointed out, the narrative is all over the place. But some of the dialogues from the ladies are gold.

Synopsis They shared more than their rooms! Serial killing makes summer vacation more exciting! Popular reviews More The year is young. After watching J. D. 's Revenge, you decide to go on a random Arthur Marks film festival. Just because. You select, semi-at random, The Roommates since it's also available on Amazon Prime. It turns out to be a summer sex comedy that takes a giallo-ish twist. The sexploitation is light, but the skeevy vibes resound. The randy young ladies tout an alternate sexual liberation, a peppy and buoyant sort of lady empowerment that eventually crashes on the beach of uncool and nigh criminal maleness. Douchey dudes with varying degrees of creep. "What could be more fun than making love to beautiful young girls … I guess most young girls have a 'father' complex. ' They like making it with old men. " You find the tone is all over the place, which eventually includes an "unknown" killer. (Marki Bey was my personal highlight: cute as a button, sexy, with plenty of verve. )

The ego is sky flying, man, with this, And what spin is put on pride is a null. With free love you sink in a mindful bliss, While age, with good old care, it sleeps at lull. The man with the beard will chop up the wood, For the girl with her coz out at the place. The boy at lake has dream for if he could. The joy of love is mostly in the chase. A lot of pool, the time is spent in sun, This girl is wise to the way of the man. You swim and dance and have all sort of fun, But death is never part of a girl's plan. This aged groove is way, way out of tune, The time, gone all, now lost, your head will swoon. One of the rare instances in which a film from this era/genre actually cultivates distinct personalities for its female leads. The Roommates is surprisingly... great. Plot-wise, it's a bizarro trek through a lot of different exploitation genres (nurses pictures, beach films, proto-slasher, hippies-ploitation, and a dash of family melodrama), and yet... it never feels overstuffed. It produces an uncanny ability to be in the moment, truly capturing its carefree attitude that the girls exhibit throughout the film.

's Revenge, this exploitation film was a pretty decent little watch and something I was pleased to add to the collection. A group of girlfriends find work for the summer in Lake Arrowhead, and this naturally gives us the usual smattering of nudity and hook-ups with the locals that you'd expect from an exploitation film of this vintage, but then the film takes a turn towards being more of a slasher in the final reel, which felt like an interesting twist if nothing else. Oh, and to be fair, the murderer is pretty obvious, if you've been paying any sort of attention at all, but it was just a different direction than I expected the film to take. It's a fun little time-waster, give it a rental. Bizarre sex comedy, exploitation movie, with a weird slasher ending all taking place at Lake Arrowhead. I have to imagine that Tarantino found some inspiration for Death Proof from the first half of this movie. As it has a lot of group female banter until the tops come and the kills begin. There is currently a great quality version of this on Prime streaming.
