In speaking to Will's parents, Lou learns that perhaps he needs to feel a bit more manly to get out of his funk. Should this be higher or lower? Will: When I was a kid, this used to be my favorite place in the whole world. Lou: I think this would still be my favorite spot. Will: That's because you haven't been anywhere. Lou: Oh, so where's better than this then? Will: Paris, Place Dauphine, right by the Pont Neuf. If I shut my eyes now, I know exactly how it feels to be in that little square. Lou: So let's go! We could get on the Eurostar right now. Will: You don't get it, Clark. I want to be in Paris as me, the old me. Will and Lou discuss the beauty of the nearby landscape, though it isn't as loved by Will as his favorite place in Paris. While Lou urges them to visit that Paris spot, Will doesn't want to go in his current state, rather who he was before the accident. Should this be higher or lower?

Wouldn't that undermine everything Will had been saying about his life? I think that while that decision would appeal to the hopeless romantics, it wouldn't be true to Will's character. "We need more disabled stories: that is something I agree with wholeheartedly. But I honestly don't believe that a book showing one mans story, one mans decision, represents the entire disability community as a whole. I don't think there's any story out there that can do that. " What does director Thea Sharrock say? "My nephew is in a wheelchair and I hope he will be pleased to see this shown in a way that does not make audiences too uncomfortable, " Tharrock said in an interview with The Guardian, published ahead of the film's release. "If we had shown Will being taken in and out of his chair, or put in a hoist over a bath, the impression we would give is of difficulty. I wanted to make it more normal. " "We did not want to be dismissive of either side, " she added, when asked about the assisted suicide storyline, and the anticipated controversy.

Should this be higher or lower? Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures Will: Interesting choice of footwear Lou: What do you mean by that? Will: That can't be from around here. Lou: Why not? Will: This is the kind of place people come to when they've got tired of actually living. Lou: I'm happy here. Will: Well, you shouldn't be. You only get one life. It's actually your duty to live it as fully as possible. Will sees his town as a depressing one where those with no hope in life go to suffer. While Lou says she is happy there, he urges her to widen her horizons and live life as much as she can. Should this be higher or lower? 3 Show Him How Good His Life Can Be Katrina: Use the time he's got left. Show him how good his life can be.... Camilla: Will's barely left the house in two years. We have tried. Steven: Yes, but we haven't succeeded. Will needs to be allowed to feel like a man. As Lou beings working as a caregiver and companion to Will, she struggles to give him hope when he has little himself.

He loses much more than his mobility. He also loses his home, unable to stay there as it is not wheelchair accessible. He loses his girlfriend, and even though part of that is because he shuts her out of his pain filled, and chair locked life, he still misses her. Finally, resigned to the new circumstances of his life, he tells his parents that he would like to schedule an appointment with Dignitas in Switzerland to enlist the help of a specialist to put an end to his non-stop suffering. At first horrified, his parents fight his decision, but when Will tries to take his own life by making use of a nail sticking out and scraping it across his wrists until they are in ribbons, they reluctantly relent, but only on the condition that he give them an addition six months. He agrees. Soon after, his mother hires a second caregiver to help with Will when his primary caregiver, Nathan is not there. Louisa Clark is recently unemployed, twenty six years old, and has no experience in this field, but she is a pleasant and bubbly human being with a positive attitude, and Camilla Traynor is praying that she will get through to her son when no one else has been able.

Me Before You Summary & Study Guide

"I think it's good that Me Before You has provoked such conversation about disability, because I do think we need to tell more disabled stories, especially in films, " she said. "We need to see more characters with disabilities, and that's something I hope will come out of this whole discussion. " "But when I read the book, I didn't see Will as a plot device, as a 'pity party' or as an inspiration for the able bodied. I saw him as a layered, complex character with so much depth, and his decision to end his life doesn't change that. Fiction isn't always about telling stories that represent everyone; it's about telling stories about complex individuals. "I don't agree that the book suggests that being disabled is a fate worse than death. It's not an opinion, it's a story, and we shouldn't take away Will's right to choose simply because he is fictional. "A story like this was going to come under fire regardless of Will's decision to end his life. If his decision had been different, if Louisa had managed to change his mind, then wouldn't that suggest that love is enough?

Oh, but he was loved. " 13. "They say you only really appreciate a garden once you reach a certain age, and I suppose there is a truth in that. It's probably something to do with the great circle of life. There seems to be something miraculous about seeing the relentless optimism of new growth after the bleakness of winter, a kind of joy in the difference every year, the way nature chooses to show off different parts of the garden to its full advantage. "How could I explain to this girl what Will and I had been to each other, the way I felt that no person in the world had ever understood me like he did or ever would again? How could she understand that losing him was like having a hole shot straight through me, a painful, constant reminder, an absence I could never fill? " 16. "The thing about being catapulted into a whole new life — or at least, shoved up so hard against someone else's life that you might as well have your face pressed against their window — is that it forces you to rethink your idea of who you are.
